KACMUN is an abbreviation that stands for the Korean American Coalition Model United Nations. Model United Nations, also known as MUN, is a programme that encourages civic engagement among high school students in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles. Students, in the role of delegates from their respective member nations in the United Nations (UN), take part in and reenact UN sessions in conferences held all over the country to address a wide range of both historical and contemporary concerns on a global scale. Students are required to prepare for these conferences by conducting research in advance and preparing speeches to deliver to their respective committees.
MUN programmes are typically offered in the form of a class or an extracurricular club and can most frequently be found in high schools located in affluent suburban areas. However, urban schools in low-income communities frequently lack the resources necessary to successfully implement programmes of this nature. The KAC adapted this programme so that it could be run as a community club and made a few other changes to the original programme design.
Programme of the KACMUN
After-school assistance for disadvantaged high school students in the wider Koreatown area is the goal of the KAC Model United Nations programme (MUN), which is run by the Koreatown American Council. Every week, between 4:30 and 6:00 in the evening, there is a meeting of the Model United Nations (MUN). Students can choose to join on either Tuesday or Thursday. MUN is designed to provide inner-city kids with an understanding of the world at large – geopolitics, international relations, and national and international politics – while improving everyday skills. This is done in an effort to engage students in a critical reflection on not just global but also local issues. MUN is intended to give inner-city adolescents an understanding of the world at large.
The Korean American Coalition has a long history of providing leadership training. The National College Leadership Conference is the country’s longest continuously running college leadership conference, and the KAC Summer College Internship Programme provides highly qualified college students with summer internships to gain experience in their fields of interest. Both of these programmes are examples of the KAC’s commitment to developing future leaders. Due to the fact that the MUN programme is not provided at any of the local high schools, it is intended to serve as an ambitious leadership training programme for the students of the local high schools.
Each year, applications are accepted during the months of August and September. The MUN programme takes place from September all the way through May. The start date of the current academic year at MUN is September 2, 2015, and the end date is April 30, 2016.
